5 Good Reasons to Organize Your Neighbors Strong Neighborhoods Make Safe Neighborhoods. 1. Prevent Crime Neighborhood Watch
Conducted by the Long Beach Police Department, the Neighborhood Watch program trains residents to recognize and report suspicious activities. Program participants also learn about home security and other crime prevention techniques. Residents who complete the Neighborhood Watch program receive window placards and street signs warning outsiders of their participation in the program. Presentations are available to homeowners’ associations, clubs, schools, and neighborhood community groups. 2. Survive the ‘Quake’ Neighborhood Preparedness When disaster strikes emergency services will be overwhelmed for the first 72 hours following a major earthquake, flood or fire. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) The Long Beach Fire Department provides a 20-hour course offering hands-on training in life safety skills to help you and your family be better prepared for emergencies and to survive a disaster.

3. Create Community Good Neighbor Network 5th District neighborhood leaders can provide the essential communication that brings neighborhoods together and serve as vital links between the City and the neighborhoods.
The City of Long Beach Neighborhood Resources Center provides basic training on how to meet and maintain contact with neighbors. Block leaders also are informed of City issues that impact their neighborhoods.
New and established neighborhood leaders meet several times each year with Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske to trade neighborhood tips, learn communications techniques and provide input in issues that impact the 5th Council District and the City of Long Beach.
4. Party in the Streets Neighborhood Block Party Program Through the block party program, the city temporarily closes residential streets so neighbors can stay in touch at their front doorsteps.
This is a great opportunity for neighbors to become acquainted before an emergency strikes. Block parties may be held for celebrations, sports, games, barbeques and other neighborhood activities.
5. The Quality of Our Neighborhoods Should Matter 5th Council District Good Neighbor Forums 5th Council District residents are without a doubt some of the most involved citizens in Long Beach. They want to know what is happening in their City and in their neighborhood. They want to provide input on the issues that impact Long Beach.
The 5th Council District Good Neighbor Forums provide leaders in neighborhoods of the area an opportunity to hear first-hand what their city government is doing concerning the issues of public safety, infrastructure, libraries, recreation and parks.
